EbelRanker

EbelRanker uses the Ebel method to calculate the pass mark for a multiple choice paper. To do this, a user goes through the questions and grades them by difficulty and importance. The pass mark will be displayed as a 'cut score'.

Main Screen

The available exams appear in the list on the main screen. The app comes with an example exam called Nursery Rhymes. Initially the row just lists the name of the exam. Once you have started rating the exam, the cut scores will also be displayed.

You can delete exams by tapping the edit button.

Tap on Nursery Rhymes row to score the exam.

Question Screen

The question screen gives you the stem and the answers. To rank the question, choose the answer you consider to be correct, and then rank the question in terms of difficulty and relevance.

You can also provide comments on the question in the comments field.

The slider at the bottom of the screen allows you to scroll through the questions. The right and left arrow buttons will take you to the next or previous unscored question

To return to the main screen, tap the top of the screen where the progress bar is.

Once you have chosen an answer and graded the question, the app will mark the correct answer with a green tick, and if the chosen answer, if incorrect, with a red cross.

You are no longer able to change your answer or your grading once the correct answer has been shown.

Assessment Complete

You may answer the questions in any order you wish.

Once you have finished, the app will display your Cut Score, and your Adjusted Cut Score.

The Adjusted Cut Score is calculated by increasing the difficulty grade by one, in all questions in which the assessor made a mistake.

Exporting Data

Tapping the blue action button for an exam gives you options for exporting the data.

Once the exam has been assessed, send summary will email a file containing the cut score and adjusted cut score, and any comments made.

Send summary emails a text file with the cut score, adjusted cut score, the given answers to each question and any comments made.

These two options are only available after the exam has been fully assessed.

Export Raw Exam allows you to email the exam to others for them to assess.

Export Screen

Tapping Export Raw Exam takes you to the Export Screen.

Here you can choose a name for your exam, and a password. EbelRanker encrypts the exam file with the AES 256 bit encryption provided by Apple.

When you tap Export, you will be able to email the encrypted file to your chosen assessors.

Importing a File

To import a file, tap the folder button on the main screen. This will allow you to select a file from your iCloud Drive.

You can import either a text file, or an encrypted exampaper file. If the file is encrypted you will be prompted for a password.

To load a new exam, you should save a text file to your iCloud Drive and import it. The file should be in tab delimited format.

The first row should consist of:
Question ID—tab—Correct answer (A-E)—tab—Question Stem

Answer rows should be:
tab—tab—Answer

You can have up to 5 potential answers for a question.

This format is repeated for as many questions as you have.

Settings Screen

The final Cut Score will depend on the weightings you give for each cell in the importance vs difficulty matrix.

Three possible weightings are included in the app presents. You can choose them by tapping the buttons at the bottom of the screen.

Alternatively, you can enter custom values for your matrix.
