There should be an indication of the medical gas supply status in the operating theatre. The alert light means you are operating on the secondary supply. The emergency button means that the supply has failed.

This photo was taken in a day procedure centre, where there was no automatic switch to the backup supply. Prior to this the Alert alarm had gone off indicating that the medical air needed to be manually switched to the secondary bank.
