You can open the dictionary window by option double clicking on a word in one of the text fields, or by choosing Tools/Lookup in Dictionary or Window/Dictionary. Choose the desired language to translate from using the tabs, type the desired word or phrase into the search field and press the ‘Enter’ or the ‘Return’ key. You have a choice of three dictionaries to search, WORDS, Lewis' Elementary Latin Dictionary and Lewis & Short.
You can now also confine your search to specific word types. In Lewis' dictionary you can choose which entry types to search as well.
You can turn the dictionary into a floating window, by using the appropriate selection in the Preferences Window.
WORDS
LatinEdit parses the output from WORDS and displays it as a list. The rightmost column of the list indicates the frequency of the word, the second column the word type and the third shows the principal parts, case or person and meaning.
Selecting a word and choosing Tools/Decline/Conjugate will open the Declensions or Conjugations window if the word is inflected. Note that only one word at a time may be translated from English to Latin.
If you wish to view the raw output from WORDS, pulling the split bar up will reveal this output.
Lewis
You can search Lewis' dictionary either from English to Latin or Latin to English. If you enter multiple words, the program will attempt to match the multiple word string, rather than doing lookups of the individual words.
You can perform a regex search on this dictionary. The above is searching for words ending in idis, amongst the Latin word forms.
Lewis & Short
LatinEdit also includes the Lewis & Short dictionary parsed from the XML file provided by Perseus. Because the entries in Lewis & Short contain such a large volume of data, by default many of hte references are contracted, and etymological and other notes are hidden by default. To see this data control click on the line which you are interested in, and choose Show Additional. If there is etymological data or other notes for an entry you will see a right facing arrow after the word type. Hidden references are marked with [ref].
You can conduct normal or regex searches in this dictionary as well.
Contextual Menus
You can also use the contextual menus to search a different dictionary for an entry, and copy the base forms of a word.
